Saudi Arabian Ambassador to the United States
Prince Bandar bin Sultan Visits the City Club of Cleveland Saudi Arabian Ambassador to the United States, Prince Bandar bin Sultan, addressed The City Club at a special Forum on Monday, December 15, 2003. Prince bin Sultan is the son of the Saudi Defense Minister, who is second in line to the throne. He has served as Ambassador to the United States for twenty years and has worked with four United States presidents. The United States has always had a delicate relationship with Saudi Arabia, as the kingdom houses the United States' largest oil reserve. This relationship was tested after the September 11 attacks, when it was discovered that fifteen of the nineteen hijackers were Saudi Arabian nationals. It was also discovered that hundreds of millions of dollars were given to extremist groups, including Al Qaeda, by Saudi companies and charities. Prince Bandar has argued that while U.S. policy in the Middle East has its flaws, it cannot be blamed for the atrocities of September 11. He also spoke candidly about the dissidents within his own country, about relations between Saudi Arabia and other governments in the Middle East, and about the role that Saudi Arabia will take in the fight against terrorism. Prince Bandar said, "Saudi Arabia is committed to supporting the reconstruction of Iraq and firmly believes that the United States should not go it alone. We stand with the world community in efforts to bring stability and peace to Iraq and relieve the suffering of the Iraqi people. The capture of Saddam Hussein will end an infamous chapter of history for Iraq and the region. Saddam Hussein was a menace to the Arab world, and his reign of terror will be remembered for its brutality, aggression and oppression." |
